An Incredible Place to Work

The ratio of residents to staff is amazing. In the skilled nursing care section which has from 10-15 residents, a day shift will have 3 CNAs, another CNA that assists from 6:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., a CNA from the Assisted Living side that comes over to help when she can, an LPN and an RN.There is also a bath aide that comes in, as well as Hospice. They’ve also recently added a restorative aide to work with the sisters on their exercises and ambulation, taking a lot of those duties off the CNAs.

On weekdays there is a housekeeping crew and maintenance is on site. Administration is also available weekdays. There is a front desk person 7 days a week to answer the phones and door.

It’s a very positive place to work. I have rarely been held because of a call-in, and then we have such a good group of people working that when I have been held, it’s only for a few hours. For example, I was supposed to be done at 2:15 p.m. but someone called in, so someone else came in at 6 p.m. so I wouldn’t need to do a double. Because of that, I’ve also been willing to come in at 2 a.m. when scheduled for a 5 a.m. start so someone held for a double due to a NOC shift call-in could go home a little earlier.

They have a wide variety of shift options, and they’re willing to make adjustments when they can. I was hired as a 0.6 day shift employee. Another employee wanted their every-other-Tuesday off, so they allowed me to take her shift and become 0.7. They even have an every-other-weekend only CNA position for someone who only wants to work 2 out of 14 days.

They have a good mix of “lifers”
and those going to school, so they can usually accommodate school schedules. For example, I had that 0.7 position for a year and was able to schedule my prerequisite classes around my shifts. Then, when I entered my Core Nursing (which was 5 days a week), I was able to switch to casual call.

Low Stress Work Environment

I worked 3rd shift, and the Srs I had contact with were absolutely lovely. A bit behind the times with paper charting and MARs, causing a bit more paperwork, but well worth the effort. Management is way different than any place I’ve ever worked as the ultimate decision regarding most things, including in nursing, is made by the Sister in charge. You do not have to be Catholic to work there. It could help. There are no state or federal inspections, though the facility is one of the cleanest I’ve ever set foot in. The Srs under our care have more ability to refuse cares and insist on doing things that would be contraindicated to most elderly, but these ladies have had to be headstrong their entire lives, so it’s a challenge at times. I hated to leave.

A Very Nice Place to Work

This is a good place to work. The management is great. They make sure that the working atmosphere exudes respect and tolerance. A typical day at work is busy but everybody lends a hand to each other. Residents are all nuns so working here you get blessed all the time.
